Mr. Lorne Shewfelt, TransAlta Utilities Corporation, will conduct a presentation on wind power generation, with emphasis on the Alberta experience, discussing:

- How a wind turbine works
- Design considerations and placement
- The impact of wind power in the world, in Canada, and in Alberta
- Disadvantages, limitations, and concerns with wind power
- The effect of wind power on operation of the electrical grid
** Parking – Paid meter parking and/or at the NAIT Parkade, on the east side of 106 streets and 118 Ave.

Following Mr. Shewfelt’s presentation we will tour the Alternate Energy Program - NAIT

The main energy products used by consumers include electrical power, liquid transportation fuels, and combustible gases for heat generation. Many of the other alternative energy technologies (such as wind, solar PV, hydro, and fuel cells) focus primarily on power generation. Biomass, on the other hand, can be used to produce all three major categories of energy products: for example, combustion of wood pellets to generate electricity, fermentation to produce bioethanol as a transportation fuel, and anaerobic digestion of sewage to generate methane, a combustible gas. This course explores the many opportunities for using a variety of biomass feedstocks to produce various energy products and other value-added products.

The facility offers a broad foundational understanding of the wide range of energy storage technologies, their designs and operating fundamentals, applications, market prospects and challenges. By the end of this course students are able to compare the relative performance of energy storage systems.

Students learn to assess solar photovoltaic and thermal energy potential by calculating the system needs and requirements based on demand loads.

REMINDER – If you haven’t confirmed your attendance and would like to attend, respond to this e-mail before Monday, March 16, 2015.

We will meet in the Control Room 2R19. You can get to it by going down the receiving dock on 111st by the Praxair tank. On the left you will notice a double door to come in. Parking is bad there but 111 St. is your best bet.

The Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre provides long term care to a diverse population in the Edmonton city center, following a deep-rooted tradition of healing the body, enriching the mind and nurturing the soul. There are 14 long-term care units ranging from 24 beds to 36 residents. (2013/14 Overview; 1,000 staff, 434 Volunteers and 495 Continuing Care Beds).

The Edmonton General Hospital became a Continuing Care Centre in 1989 after the construction of the Grey Nuns Hospital in southeast Edmonton. The site has been in existence since 1895 when the Sisters of the Grey Nuns began looking after the sick in the building. At that time Edmonton was still only a village.

We will tour the control room, boiler room and some mechanical rooms. Coffee, hot chocolate and donuts will be supplied.

October 21, 2014 Meeting & Tour
The Edmonton Branch had a great time at Celanese Corporation and Pavandeep Dhuga, Chief Engineer, sure gave a great tour of the facility which lasted about 2/1/2 hrs long. We had quite a few students on the tour along with Jason Kjenner, PE, and others from Air Products attending.   Thank you for your time and assistance, Parvandeep, & Ed Hnytka, PE, Edmonton Branch President, whom arranged it!  It is very much appreciated!  I was unable to attend the meeting and tour as I was away on vacation in Europe, for over 3 weeks.

This is also nomination night for executive Edmonton Branch, and nominations for a proposed NAIT Power Engineering, Student Membership Branch will be accepted.

Refreshments will be served courtesy of Edmonton Branch.

Old Business:
1.  Annual Financial Returns:  The AIPE financial return must be submitted by Dec. 31, 2014.  The Societies Act Registration, for the “PE” designation is due in July 2015.  No changes have been made.

2.  IPE Convention 2016:  Ed Hnytka suggested that we host the National Convention in 2016 again.  The last one we had done was in 2003, and was a huge success.  Ed Hnytka will contact former and current members that have organized this event namely, Ray Kjenner and Vic Small, etc.  However, the IPECC & Refrigeration Conference is also taking place at this time, as well as the CSA AND ACI possibly.  This issue will be brought up at the Alberta Area meeting, Saturday, October 25, 2014.  If you are interested in attending the Alberta Area meeting, in Red Deer, AB., contact Ed Hnytka, at ehnytka@shaw.ca.  We do require the support of the IPE Head Office, prior to making a commitment.  There are a large number of volunteers that will be required.

3.  Other Business:  (Done) It was suggested that we approach Saskatoon & Regina Power Engineering students, at SIASK (Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science & Technology) with the possibility of forming sub-branches, under the Edmonton Branch.  John McLay and Ed Hnytka did follow-up and drove to Saskatoon, in Aug 2014, and made a presentation to the Power Engineering students.

4.  Treasurer’s Report:  The current balance for the Edmonton Branch was given and not published here.
*Treasurer, Duncan Macdonald, reported that the Bank of Montreal, Windsor Branch is now charging us a monthly fee of $2.75.  This past spring, we negotiated FREE service charges on our account.  Ed Hnytka will follow-up.  We were able to do this with no fees, as we are a non-profit organization. (There has been no action at this time).

5.  New Anti-Spam Legislation: New Canadian legislation took effect on July 1, 2014, prohibiting distribution of e-mails from business, without consent from the recipients.  We are subject to the law as it stands right now; The National President is meeting with the web masters to come up with an approved document. Apparently, we have 3 years to complete this process and will continue to send e-mails.  An opportunity to not receive further e-mails will be added on each newsletter sent out.

New Business:
1.  Meeting dates are scheduled for the following days and tentative location possibilities:
-  Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014; (The annual Christmas Dinner Meeting).  Alternative dates will be explored.
* A possible location is the Hilton Double Tree Hotel, Stages Restraint (formally the Mayfield Inn and is newly renovated).
-  Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015; NAIT

2.  Alberta Area Meeting:
As well Alberta Area had a conference call Sunday, Oct 26, 2014, and the turnout was absolutely superb.  New Executive members are as follows: Director, Ed Hnytka, Assistant Director, Gary Codner, Assist-Assist Director, and John McLay.

The Alberta Area holds meetings twice per year, usually in Red Deer, AB.;   however, there are inconveniences of traveling, meal, and other expenses.  Holding a Conference call can eliminate some of these unnecessary costs and travel times, etc.

3.  Treasurer’s Report:  The current balance for the Edmonton Branch was given and not published here.

**Paid Meter parking is available and Security will ticket those that do not have a valid parking pass.

**John has supplied the following information regarding his presentation, and is as follows.

I look forward to this opportunity in speaking to our up and coming generation of Power Engineers and process operators. My presentation is provide knowledge that is outside the mainstream of power engineering curriculum showing the important value of us PE”s in planning and executing the Shutdown, Turnaround for Outage. At the same time we will have some fun.

As a personal and corporate initiative, to celebrate my longstanding time as a member of the NIPE, I am in the process of donating three (3) of my authored 2nd Ed technical manuals, “Practical Management for Plant Turnarounds,” to all of the colleges in Canada with power engineering programs. There are two copies for the student library and one is for the instructors to use in the office.

I would appreciate, if possible, to take a digital picture of someone receiving the manuals and I would like to post this picture and a short write up on my website, www.pmpt.org/new/. There are presently several college posts available to review. You may need special permission for this or require me to present my news post to someone in NAIT before uploading to my website.

The “Critical Operations Plan.” is a power point presentation with case study, specifically designed for Operational Responsibility in Shutdowns, Turnarounds and Outages.

We will review several objectives such as the responsibility to the Turnaround Team; the Operations work scope support system and then design the sections that must be included in the ‘Operations Support Plan.’ You will not find this information in your Power Engineering or Gas Plant Operations courses and in most cases not even in your own plant SOP’s.

I have spent over 40 years in heavy industry working both construction and maintenance; and have been involved in excess of 200 plant turnarounds. I have chaired 11 international STO conferences and spoken at many others. I am an internationally recognized trainer, author, and consultant; and have designed the only complete Turnaround checklist available today.

My career journey has allowed me to travel to many different parts of the world and meet persons from a variety of industries and plants facilities. Plant Operators really are a brotherhood and we in Canada are the envy of our international colleagues.

The Edmonton Branch of the IPE has been my home branch for over 30 years. In that recognition any paid member of the Edmonton Branch and any student registered with any IPE Branch, in attendance, will receive a free copy of my technical manual, “Practical Management for Plant Turnarounds.” (2nd Ed). I will also donate three copies to any educational institution that has a representative attend the meeting.

**NOTE that confirmation of those attending is required, so email prior to March 14, 2014 to RSVP. Everyone is welcome!

January 2014 Meeting & Tour

posted Feb, 2014

The Edmonton Branch, Alberta Institute of Power Engineers met Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at the ‘The Filter Shop’ (formally B.G.E. Filters), whom are in their 46th year of operation. They provide clean air solutions by manufacturing, distributing and installing filters, etc., across Western Canada. They provide cost effective solutions for difficult filter solutions in Canada, with facilities in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Special “Thank you” goes to Guy Chauvet, Branch Manager, and Jim Schmidt, Industrial Account Manager, for allowing us the opportunity to visit the facility and have them explain their operation of their automated systems.  Also included was an explanation of MERV Ratings for filters and also how they are made.  MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a number from 1 to 16 that is relative to an air filter’s efficiency. The higher the MERV, the more efficient the air filter is at removing particles. At the lower end of the efficiency spectrum a fiberglass panel filter may have a MERV of 4 or 5. At the higher end, a MERV 14 filter is typically the filter of choice for critical areas of a hospital (to prevent transfer of bacteria and infectious diseases). Higher MERV filters are also capable of removing higher quantities of extremely small contaminant (particles as small as 1/300 the diameter of a human hair). A higher MERV creates more resistance to airflow because the filter media becomes denser as efficiency increases. For the cleanest air, a user should select the highest MERV filter that their unit is capable of forcing air through based on the limit of the unit’s fan power.

The Filter Shop also provides training seminars on-site to customers in their training centre, located at 5711-103A Street, in Edmonton, AB.  Call Guy Chauvet, Branch Manager, at 780-436-6961 (Ext. 233), for further details.
